The Fee Trap

Small percentage fees charged by middlemen and fund managers sound tiny, but they quietly eat away a massive chunk of your final investment savings.

Comparing Two Popular Funds

To see how fund costs differ, here is how two popular South African options stack up based on their latest published fact sheets.

(Note: These funds do completely different jobs. The S&P 500 is 100% offshore equities, so it carries higher currency and market swings. The Balanced Fund mixes local shares, bonds, property, and cash to help smooth out market drops.)

Detail Low-Cost Index ETF Active Balanced Fund
Fund Name Sygnia S&P 500 (SYG500) Allan Gray Balanced Fund
Category 100% Offshore Shares Multi-Asset (Shares, Bonds, Cash)
Running Fee (TIC)* 0.19% a year 1.85% a year
Cost on R100 000 R190 per year R1 850 per year
Year-to-Date (YTD)** 9.8% 6.6%
5-Year Return (Annualised)** 14.7% a year 14.1% a year

*Total Investment Charge (TIC) includes management fees, operating costs, and trading charges from recent fund disclosures.

**Total returns after fund charges, distributions reinvested. YTD is not annualised (Sygnia to 31 Aug 2026; Allan Gray to 31 Jul 2026).

On every R100 000 invested, the active fund charges nearly 10 times more to run than the index tracker. Active fund managers charge higher fees to research and actively shift assets to manage risk, while an index ETF simply mirrors a market index at rock-bottom cost.

What a Financial Advisor Adds

If you work through a financial advisor, that is an additional bill on top of the fund charge.

A standard ongoing advice fee is roughly 1.00% a year. It is deducted directly from your account balance:

  • Index ETF (On your own): 0.19% = R190 a year on R100 000
  • Active Fund (On your own): 1.85% = R1 850 a year on R100 000
  • Active Fund + Advisor: 1.85% + 1.00% = 2.85% = R2 850 a year on R100 000

The 20-Year Impact on R1 000 000

Here is what happens to a R1 000 000 lump sum left to grow for 20 years, assuming a baseline market return of 10% a year before fees:

On your own (Low-Cost ETF at 0.19% fee)

Ending balance R6 482 000

Lost to fees: ~R245 000

On your own (Active Fund at 1.85% fee)

Ending balance R4 681 000

Lost to fees: ~R2 046 000

With an Advisor (Active Fund + 1.00% advice = 2.85% fee)

Ending balance R3 847 000

Lost to fees: ~R2 880 000

Over 20 years, the higher-fee setup leaves you with roughly R2.6 million less from the exact same starting capital.
